Programme notes CH 04 — The Matinee
Morocco
A cabaret singer arrives in Mogador with a one-way ticket and meets a legionnaire who has learned not to care about anyone.
Marlene Dietrich's first American picture, and Sternberg lights her as if the studio had bought the light just for her. She plays Amy Jolly, singing in a tailcoat and top hat to an audience of soldiers, and Gary Cooper is the private who answers her by tipping his cap. Adolphe Menjou, the rich man who waits, is given the most patient role in the picture and makes it hurt. Watch the last shot and what Amy leaves behind in the sand before she follows the column; the film says it without a word.
