Programme notes CH 01 — The Silent Signal

Stella Maris

1918 · Directed by Marshall Neilan · 83 minutes · Silent, as transmitted

Mary Pickford plays both a sheltered invalid kept from every sorrow and the orphan drudge who has known nothing else.

The year Pickford was the most famous woman in the world, she risked her face on a part nobody asked her to play. Stella is the role the audience paid for: golden curls, a sickroom full of flowers, a household sworn to keep the world's news from her. Unity Blake is the other one — hair scraped flat, a shoulder hunched against the next blow, a charity orphan who has learned to expect nothing. Frances Marion wrote both; Marshall Neilan put them in the same frames by double exposure. Watch Unity's walk. It is the performance, and it is not a trick of the camera.
