The Devil Bat

1940 · Directed by Jean Yarbrough · 68 minutes

A small-town chemist cheated of his share breeds bats the size of eagles and teaches them to kill whoever wears his new aftershave.

The poorest studio in Hollywood and Bela Lugosi at the height of his fall, playing it as though nobody had told him. Dr. Carruthers is the town’s beloved doctor and its perfume chemist, quietly bitter that the firm he made rich paid him once. His revenge is a shaving lotion and a bat that hunts by its smell, and he hands out the samples himself with perfect courtesy. Dave O’Brien’s reporter is there to explain things; Lugosi is there to be polite. The prologue card tells you everyone in Heathville loves him. Listen to how he says goodbye.
