The Hoodlum

1951 · Directed by Max Nosseck · 62 minutes

Paroled on his mother's plea, a career thief takes a job at the gas station across from the bank.

Lawrence Tierney, six years after Dillinger and with the same director, Max Nosseck, plays a man the system lets out because his mother asks it to. His brother — played by his real brother, Edward Tierney — gives him work pumping gas, and every morning an armoured car parks outside the Fidelity bank across the street. Sixty-one minutes, no fat, no redemption on offer. Keep an eye on the station window: the robbery is planned through it, frame by frame, long before anyone says a word about money.

Kansas City Confidential (1952)

An armoured car at a bank, a year apart. The Hoodlum plans the job from a gas station across the street; Karlson's crew from behind masks. One film is about the man who cannot stop, the other about the man who has to finish it.
